Our Story
Ciao Cielo was born from the shared vision of chef Bryan Nelson and restaurateur Kate Dickins—two passionate industry veterans brought together by their love for Italian cuisine and a dream to create something deeply personal. After years working in some of Melbourne’s top kitchens and travelling through Europe, the pair opened the original 30-seat Ciao Cielo in 2010, inspired by Kate’s Italian heritage and Bryan’s Mediterranean adventures. What began as a tribute to Kate’s grandparents has since grown into one of Port Melbourne’s most cherished dining destinations. In 2018, with the help of loyal patrons turned partners, Bryan and Kate renovated the heritage-listed Port Melbourne Courthouse, transforming it into a vibrant new home for Ciao Cielo. Their hands-on, no-shortcuts philosophy—where everything is made in-house and quality is never compromised—continues to guide the restaurant’s evolution. From house-made pasta to wood-fired delights, Ciao Cielo is a heartfelt celebration of tradition, community, and la dolce vita.
